Composers! Why should Fenwick Smith record your solo flute
piece?
". . . Fenwick Smith is a Faun and a Daphnis in one, and I am honored to be so dazzlingly represented as by him and his colleagues."*
Ned Rorem
*All-Rorem CD released on Etcetera Records CD KTC 1184
"It is rare that a composer is treated to an ideal
performance without having to say a word. Even though I was familiar with
Fenwick Smith's flawless technique and his extraordinary range of color, I
was stunned by the perfect phrasing and the deep musicality with which he
recorded my City of Gold*. He is a marvelous flutist."
Martin Boykan
*Released on CRI CD 841
"All my musical encounters
with Fenwick Smith have been happy ones, from our earliest collaborations
with the Boston Musica Viva, through his revival of my Duo for Flute and
Piano*, to his splendid performance of my Flute Concerto. He brings to
every situation a rare combination of insight and imagination, qualities
which have made his annual Jordan Hall recitals an
Event."
John
Harbison *Released on Archetype CD 60104
"It’s wonderful the way you fitted in everything balance-wise, tone-wise, color-wise . . . Thanks so much; it’s just really beautiful playing."
Gunther Schuller,
commenting on Fenwick Smith's playing in the recording of Schuller's Fantasia Impromptu for flute and harpsichord,
released on Albany Records TROY668
With this project I offer a custom recording service to composers worldwide. Send me your score and, for a fee of $200 or more, depending on length and difficulty, I will produce a professional-quality digital recording of your piece. My
decades of experience working with
Boston's leading composers and new-music groups, and the fact
that I am the proprietor of the finest dedicated acoustic recording studio
in the Northeast, give me distinct advantages in making solo flute
recordings of high musical and technical quality.
Making the recording: You send the score of your solo flute piece to me at 4 Belgrade Avenue, Boston, MA 02131. (I may decline to record works that I don't feel I can
do justice to, musically or technically.) The more specific your score is, in regard to tempo, dynamics, phrasing, articulation, etc., the greater the likelihood that you will be happy with the result.
Based on the length and degree of difficulty of your piece, I propose a fee, to be no less than $200. This all-inclusive fee
covers my preparation and recording time, engineering and studio
time, editing and post-production, administration, and the cost of CD's, packing and mailing. If you agree to the proposed fee, I record the piece, and send a dub for your approval - or corrections. You are welcome to come to Boston to attend the recording session if you wish.
Rights: Once you have approved the recording and sent me your payment in full, I send you a
digital recording suitable for CD mastering. Please note that this is a demo CD only. However you or I may at any time enter into an agreement with the American Federation of Musicians Local 9-535 (AFM) to allow commercial exploitation of the recording under any of the applicable AFM agreements (e.g. Sound Recording Labor Agreement and/or any of its successor or derivative audio agreements, Motion Picture/TV Film Agreement, National Public Radio or TV Agreements, Multimedia Agreements, etc.).
All scores submitted become the property of Fenwick Smith.
