This project was self-recommending. After the passing of Bernstein, Copland, and others of their generation, Ned Rorem is among the most prominent of living American composers. His four works assembled here are appealingly varied in instrumentation, and uniformly high in quality. Although he was not present at the recording sessions, I sent performance tapes to Rorem as we worked our way through the four pieces, and was able to incorporate his suggestions in our recorded renditions. He graciously provided program notes, lending a further touch of authority to the project.
