I'm always on the lookout for composers who have written flute music of sufficient quantity, quality, and variety to make an attractive CD program. About 1990 I found that Daniel Pinkham fell into this category: Miracles is perhaps the finest piece for flute and organ, and Burton Fine and I had performed many times the Sonata da Camera Dan had written for us. His catalogue listed enough other chamber music with flute to suggest a viable project. Dan liked the idea, but he did not feel that some of this music represented him at his best, so he proceeded, over the next few years, to write a brace of wonderful new pieces specifically for this CD.
Pinkham has been described as the most frequently performed living American composer. This is not only because he has written much liturgical music, which resounds weekly in churches from coast to coast, but also because his music consistently displays the virtues of clarity, economy, beauty, and clear expressive purpose. His idiom rests on a synthesis of Fauré and Stravinsky, seasoned with his own distinctively American wit. From conception to completion, working on this project with Dan and our mutual friends and colleagues has given me great pleasure.
